As described in gpd Tech Tip #83, ‘Rotary Vane Compressors’, there are some issues associated with the rotary vane design that may lead to premature failure. For example: rotary vane compressors need to be ‘primed’ prior to installation so the vanes are properly lubricated before operating the A/C system. Otherwise, the compressor will not pump correctly and appear to be defective. The rotary vane design is also prone to malfunction if the compressor is not used over winter months. The vanes can get stuck in the guides leading to compressor failure because the compressor is unable to create pressure.
gpd has redesigned the original rotary vane design as piston compressors (#6513347, #6513348, and #6513349) for the applications listed in this tech tip. gpd’s piston replacement compressors are designed to overcome the need to ‘prime’ the compressor. This also overcomes the problem described above when the compressor is not in use over winter months. gpd’s piston replacement design keeps the compressor lubricated year round for better performance and longevity. It looks just like the rotary vane compressor externally and is a direct bolt on, bolt off replacement.
