Keeping Up with New Technology
Hybrid Scroll Style Compressors
As hybrid vehicles become more common in the market, manufacturers have had to adapt scroll compressors to work with the hybrid vehicle design. Hybrid scroll compressors are unique because they are made up of two separate compressors, a 220V and 12V. The 12V compressor operates like a typical scroll compressor using a belt driven by a 12V clutch. The 220V compressor runs from the electricity generated from the vehicle and operates the scroll through a 3-phase motor. Refrigerant is introduced and expelled between the two compressors.
CAUTION!
When working on a hybrid compressor or any part of a hybrid vehicle, use the correct safety equipment and follow proper procedures. Hybrid compressors require a specific oil with high dielectric properties. Using pag oil may cause failures in the hybrid compressor (refer to gpd Tech Tip #90 and #132). Caution must also be used with leak detection to ensure it is compatible with the system.
