1996-2024 Chevrolet Express Van/GMC Savana Blower Motor Speed Selection Troubleshoot

Experiencing an issue with the blower motor speed selection on a 1996-2024 Chevrolet Express Van or GMC Savana?

The most likely problem is the blower motor resistor has failed and will require replacement. Another common problem is the electrical connector/blower motor resistor pigtail connected to the blower motor resistor may have a short causing the socket connection to melt.​ Because these parts are electrically and thermally interdependent, replacing just one part often leads to repeat failures because the damaged component can quickly compromise the new one.

​Signs of a short can be noticed by melted plastic components. (Figure 1 and Figure 2)

The best solution for these models is a blower motor kit. Replacing the blower motor, blower motor resistor, and wiring pigtail at the same time is a reliable repair and prevents repeat failures.

Blower Motor Kit Installation

1. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the glove box or lower dash panel to access the blower motor assembly.
   
3. Unplug and remove the old blower motor and resistor.
   
4. Cut and splice the new pigtail using heat-shrink connectors or solder for a secure, weather-resistant connection.
   
5. Install the new blower motor and resistor, then reconnect all wiring.
   
6. Test the HVAC system before reassembling the dash.
