2011-2018 Audi A1 1.4L and 2003-2019 Volkswagen polo 1.6/2.4L engine coolant reservoir tank silica bag inspection
|
Some Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 models were originally equipped with an engine coolant reservoir tank containing an internal silica desiccant bag. The silica bag was designed to help reduce corrosion within the cooling system caused by contact with steel and aluminum components. However, repeated heating and cooling cycles can cause the bag material to weaken over time and eventually rupture.
When the silica desiccant bag deteriorates, small silica beads can be released into the cooling system and circulate with the coolant. These particles may restrict coolant flow by accumulating in the radiator, heater core, and/or cooling system lines. Restricted coolant flow can reduce cooling system performance and may contribute to overheating. Inspect the outside of the engine coolant reservoir tank for the words “MIT SILIKAT” to identify if the OE system has a silica desiccant bag. Replacing the OE reservoir tank with gpd Engine Coolant Reservoir Tank 2411139 helps eliminate the possibility of silica bead contamination within the cooling system. Always refer to the owner's manual for the correct coolant specification and manufacturer torque requirements when servicing the cooling system.
