As technology and manufacturing methods have improved, older A/C condenser designs have been updated. The original condenser used on Chevrolet and GMC trucks listed above was a tube and fin style, which was common at the time of manufacture. The current 3642C replacement is a parallel flow design and will look smaller in size compared to the original tube and fin style.

The updated parallel flow design is proven to be more efficient in heat transfer, improving A/C performance and producing colder venter temperatures. (For more information on Parallel Flow design condensers, see gpd Tech Tip #1). Although the updated condenser is physically smaller than the original, it is more efficient. This size difference may raise concerns, but it will function correctly when installed. The radiator support will either have holes to fit the new condenser, or a slight modification may be required.
Because the parallel-flow condenser is more efficient, the system will require up to 20% less refrigerant than the original factory specification. If the system is charged with the full factory-specified refrigerant amount, it may become overcharged, resulting in poor cooling performance.
