The driveshaft is a critical component responsible for transferring power from the transmission or transfer case to the differential. Driveshaft design varies based on vehicle length, drivetrain configuration, and performance demands. From single-piece shafts in standard RWD setups to multi-piece assemblies with center support bearings in longer vehicles, each design serves a specific purpose in controlling vibration, maintaining alignment, and ensuring efficient power delivery.

- Worn U-joints / CV joints – cause vibration and clunking
- Imbalance – due to missing weights or damage
- Bent or dented shaft – from impacts
- Bad center bearing – on multi-piece shafts

- Lack of lubrication – leads to premature wear
- Overloading / high torque – from towing or performance use
Drive Shaft Types:

RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive): A single driveshaft transfers power from the transmission (gearbox) to the rear differential. This is the most common and simplest setup, typically using one shaft with U-joints.

Center Bearing (Carrier Bearing): A longer driveshaft supported by a center (carrier) bearing to reduce vibration and improve stability. Common in longer-wheelbase vehicles where a single shaft would be too long.

2 Piece Driveshaft: A driveshaft split into two sections connected by a center support bearing. This design reduces vibration, allows, for better alignment,and is used in longer vehicles or where angles are more severe.

3 Piece Driveshaft: A three-section driveshaft with multiple joints and support points. Used in very long wheelbase applications (like trucks/vans) to manage increased length, flex, and drivetrain angles.

AWD (All-Wheel Drive: A driveshaft system that delivers power to both front and rear axles through a transfer case or center differential. Typically includes a front and rear driveshaft for full-time power distribution.
Example: 2014-2023 Jeep Cherokee

4WD (Four-Wheel Drive): Similar to AWD but usually part-time, using a transfer case to engage the front driveshaft when needed. Common in trucks and off-road vehicles for added traction.
