Risks of excess oil in the automotive air conditioning system
Adding oil unnecessarily, such as replacing a compressor without removing the existing oil, or adding extra oil “just in case”, can lead to an over oiled AC system. An over oiled AC system contains more refrigerant oil than the system is designed to handle. Excess oil can create a variety of performance and reliability issues.
Potential Problems Caused by Over Oiling
Potential Problems Caused by Over Oiling
- Reduced compressor performance
- Compressor failure (compressors cannot compress liquid oil)
- Oil coating inside the condenser and evaporator, reducing heat transfer and resulting in poor cabin cooling
- Restricted refrigerant flow, causing elevated system pressures
- Hindered expansion valve operation
- Increased fuel consumption and reduced MPG
To avoid these issues, always follow proper AC service procedures. Best practice is to evacuate the system for a minimum of 45 minutes and verify that the system holds vacuum after evacuation. Evacuation helps remove excess oil or residual flush from the AC system. Ensuring the correct oil balance in the AC system is essential for optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency.
