2011-2017 Nissan Leaf Electric Water Pump Service Tip
|
2011-2017 Nissan Leaf models use a liquid cooling system, with two electric water pumps to manage heat from the inverter and battery pack. It is like a traditional engine cooling system – the electric water pumps circulate coolant and the radiator dissipates heat.
Pump 1 (Inverter Cooling Pump) - Located at the rear of the engine bay, beneath the reservoir tank on the passenger side Pump 2 (Drive Motor Cooling Pump) - Located in the driver’s front wheel well, under the headlight |

When servicing the electric water pumps on a 2011-2017 Nissan Leaf, follow these key tips to ensure smooth installation and avoid future issues:
- Keep it dry – These pumps are susceptible to moisture damage. Ensure all electrical connections are dry and securely fastened before powering the system.
- Check connections – The pumps use a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal that provides feedback to the ECU. Any moisture, broken or misaligned connector, or loose fittings can cause signal interference and trigger a dashboard warning.
- Coolant maintenance – Coolant plays an important role in heat transfer and preventing corrosion. The Nissan Leaf has three coolant reservoirs that should be inspected for adequate coolant levels and contamination and serviced per manufacturer’s specifications. It is also important to check/test the radiator cap and replace if pressure test fails.
